We will spend a fair amount of time gathering as much information we can about the application requirements (some companies spend little time on this step which, in turn, leads to misinterpretation down the road - we perform the investigative work before we write a single line of code to eliminate any unnecessary issues after the application has been written).

This is accomplished by using one of the best tools available to almost all of us: communication. If the customer can't communicate what he/she wants in an application, we will spend as much time as it takes to help achieve the desired vision. It usually doesn't have anything to do with how much or little someone knows about web applications - just how well that person can describe what he/she want on paper.
